Description

This amazing edge on galaxy is a whopping 95 million light years away!  I can image it with my Celestron 8 at 1450mm.  NGC 5746, part of the Virgo III group, which is part of the Virgo Supercluster of galaxies, is thought to be a barred galaxy, similar to the Needle Galaxy.  It is thought that the boxy central bubble is caused by the barred nature of the galaxy.  I think it looks more similar to the Sombrero Galaxy M104.  The fact that I can see some of the edge on ring structure, and that this galaxy is so far away, is very cool!  Clear Skies
Mark
